Web design

UX illustrations website

During my study of Communication & Multimedia design I followed the course UX Illustrations in which I was tasked to create a website using my own illustrations. The website had to be a storytelling website, which would be enhanced by your own illustrations. I chose to design a website which revolves round the stars and their history, for which I created illustrations in Procreate.

Target audience

The target audience for this project includes anyone with a curiosity about the stars, specifically those interested in the history of stars and the role they’ve played in shaping human understanding and progress. This website aims to provide them with meaningful and engaging content. The website is designed not only to inform but also to captivate its visitors through visually immersive storytelling and accessible explanations.

Storyboard

The most important part of the course was learning to convey a message through a website using illustrations. This meant starting with a story to tell. To determine the focus of my website, I researched the history of stars, and based on that, I created a roadmap for the site.

Sketching & moodboard

With the roadmap in place, I began sketching out ideas for each page. Since every page conveyed a different message, it was important that the illustrations matched the content. After creating many sketches, I selected the ones that best supported the message. These sketches also helped me define the site's aesthetic, which led to the creation of a moodboard.

Digitalizing sketches

Using Procreate, I began digitizing the sketches for each page. I didn’t have a set color palette yet, so I started with shadow figures against a gray sky. I experimented with different palettes to see what worked best and eventually chose a blueish tone with bright white stars. This made the stars stand out and created a nice contrast with the dark figures.

Prototyping

To simulate a real website, I created a clickable prototype. This allowed me to experience the site from a user's perspective and better evaluate the flow and interaction. Viewing it this way helped me identify areas for improvement, refine the layout, and make sure the illustrations and messages were coming across clearly. It also gave me a clearer idea of how the final website would feel in action.
